A few years ago almost nobody asked us about Manipur. Now it comes up most weeks, usually as "my friend has one and says she is very good."

There is very little written about it honestly, so here is what we know from actually placing them.

Where they are from

Manipur is a state in northeast India, near the Myanmar border. Culturally it is quite different from the parts of India most Singaporeans picture, closer in food, features and customs to Southeast Asia.

We have worked this corridor for years, alongside Mizoram, which sits just south of it.

English is usually the draw

This is the single biggest reason families ask.

English is widely used in education across the northeast, so most of the helpers we place from Manipur speak it comfortably, not just functionally. For a household where the children are schooling in English, or where an elderly parent needs someone who can explain things to a doctor clearly, that matters every single day.

What they tend to be good at

From what we see: childcare and schoolwork support, because of the language. General household management. And they usually adapt to Singapore quickly, partly because the food and climate are not a shock.

Being fair about the trade-offs

Not everything is a fit for everyone.

If your household cooks a specific regional cuisine daily, a helper who grew up with it will start faster. Some families also want someone who shares their language at home with an elderly parent who is not comfortable in English, and in that case Manipur may not be the right match.

There is also no visa shortcut. Singapore is not on India's ECR list, so no eMigrate clearance is required, but the MOM process is the same as for anyone else.

Nationality tells you a little. Her record tells you far more.

If you are considering one

Ask the same questions you would ask about any helper. What has she actually done, for how long, and why did she leave.

We keep helpers from Manipur and Mizoram in our pool alongside Indonesia, the Philippines and Myanmar. If you want to see who is available, just ask.
